London based Jeweller Daniel Darby has gained a reputation for beautifully crafted jewellery that takes inspiration from surprising sources.
Daniel has been designing and making jewellery for over 10 years. He studied jewellery design at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University. After graduating Daniel worked for some of London's most respected Silversmiths and jewellery houses, whilst spending his weekends selling his handmade silver jewellery at markets and craft fairs around the city. In 2014 Daniel established his own company, designing for men and women. His jewellery draws out an elegant beauty from what would otherwise be harsh, spikey or industrial subject matter.
Traditional techniques still underpin all of his designs, and every piece is lovingly hand made by highly skilled jewellers in Daniels workshop or by specialist craftsmen and women in London's jewellery quarter Hatton Garden. The aim is to create jewellery that will be treasured, and stands the test of time.
Daniel launches one core collection each year, as well as creating bespoke commissioned pieces of jewellery, and many engagement and wedding rings.
Each piece of jewellery starts life in Daniels sketchbook, where ideas and inspirations are jotted down. Promising ideas are then drawn up in more detail, before Daniel hand carves the chosen design from wax. Working by hand Daniel is able to add tiny details and textures that give each piece an unmistakable character. The wax master can then be cast into precious metal using the lost wax casting technique. Once cast it is worked on by hand through a variety of stages, before finally being polished when it becomes a finished piece of jewellery.
Daniel has always been committed to working in a way that is as ethically responsible as possible and in January 2016 he announced a move towards producing all jewellery from Fairtrade or recycled materials. Later that year he became a Fairtrade Gold licencee and released his first collection of wedding rings made from Fairtrade gold.
